Well I have returned to the coast after the Country Music Marathon and a few days back in da Ham. My time at the race turned out to be 3:11:29, a mere 30 seconds from a BQ. The conditions were miserable for a marathon. At the start it was already in the 60's without a cloud in the sky. As the race went on it only got worse. The back half of the course has no shade at all. I ran by a bank that was displaying the time and temperature only to see that it was 77 degrees at 9:10. By the time the race was over it was in the 80's and people were dropping like flies.
As for the actual race, a buddy and I were going to run 7:30s for the first 5, 7:15s til the half, 7s til 20, and whatever happened after that. I stayed on pace and had a couple miles at 6:40 around mile 17 and 18 on the downhills. I was feeling good and was glad that I started conservatively. Things started to fall apart around mile 22. The last 5 miles are in a park that loops around and we were able to see the runners ahead of us (along with the mile markers). I started slowing and cramping at mile 22 but was still close to my goal, then the last mile I really slowed and lost those 30 seconds. Oh well, considering the temperature I consider it a good day. Had it been different conditions I would have had a great day. I'll just focus this summer and find a good race in the fall.
I did learn two lessons I will share with y'all:
1) SUNSCREEN. I ran shirtless and am paying for it now. My shoulders feel like leather.
2) Thorlos on a sweaty day are a bad idea. They wicked sweat away pretty well, but since i was pouring two cups of water on me at each stop they did get pretty wet.
I am sorry it took me a while to post, we were pretty busy up in Bham.
