Sam and I came home to our hometown of Selma this weekend for a friends engagement party and found out there was an 8k this morning. We also found out it was cash prizes and since no one in Selma runs decided it would be easy money. Friday night I found out that there was some guy around here who was fast so I would have a hard time winning. Let me speed up now. I get to the race, picking up the registration stuff, trying to figure out who this fast guy was. Finally someone pointed him out to me. A skinny guy wearing full sweats, cotton t-shirt, big afro, and green toothpick in his mouth. Oh yea, and either slightly cross-eyed, or had been enjoying some "herbs" I thought there was no way he'd be any good. Mile 1: I hit 5:50 even and he was already maybe 10 seconds ahead. at mile 2 I did 6:13 but was about the same back. going into mile 3 I knew that was the only mile with a hill so I really pushed it and closed to maybe 50 yards before the downhill. I didnt see mile 3's marker but 3 and 4 was 12:20 and I was dead, He opened up another gap on me and although I did a 5:50 final mile I couldn't catch him. And yes, he still had the toothpick at the end of the race. But I did hit a new PR with 30:18. Sam took the ladies overall going away with a new PR of 35:20 and no girl was within 2 minutes of her. She will probably have more comments on the run but It was definitely and interesting run. I'll have to see if I can link a photo of this winner on here.
