I want to preface this race report with the following: If anybody reading this ever hears me talk of running a race longer than a 10K in the months of June, July, or August please give me a swift kick to the boys.
That being said, here goes:
The good news, if there is any, is that I managed to survive better than most and pull out a 4th place finish. The conditions were awful. The race started at 6am, but it was still 78 degrees and 85 percent humidity at the start. I went out between 6:15 and 6:20 pace and was in about 10th place at the 5k. After mile 5, I really started to feel the effects of the heat. I still managed to come through the 10K checkpoint at 39:38 or 6:23 pace, and in about 7th place. At about mile 8 I was really suffering and made the course a bit longer in some places choosing to run through several yards with the sprinklers on. I seriously considered dropping out but I was still passing people and didn't know my way back without walking the entire course anyway. On a side note, my friend who I ran with dropped out just after mile 6. From mile 8-11 I managed to move up from 7th to 4th and spent the last 2 miles closing on the guy in 3rd. I finished with an official time of 1:26:27, about 5 minutes off of the time I wanted to run. I was pretty discouraged until I talked to the race winner. The guy had just graduated from Mississippi State and ran 1:11 in December. He said he knew he was in better shape now and planned to run sub 1:10, maybe as low as 1:07. He ended up running 1:15. If it cost him 5 minutes than I don't feel so bad about being that far off of my goal time.
I left immediately after the race and didn't even stay for awards. After drinking 3 bottles of Powerade and two bottles of water I was still very dehydrated and sleepy. I took a nap and woke up with the worst headache I've ever had. I had no appetite and eventually threw up all the fluids I had taken in. Eventually I was able to keep fluids down but it took all day Saturday and part of Sunday before I felt back to normal again. I still have some cramping going on in my lower back but at least I made it. This was truly the worst race conditions I've ever run in. The course was nice but a bit hilly. I would love to run it in November or December. As for now I'm just glad I survived.

it should go without saying that it was hot.
miles bowman ran out fast. 5:26(ish) first mile. i was 8-10 seconds behind. at the turn around an older guy did a face plant. jacob stopped and helped him up, costing him 5 seconds or so (i wouldve just hurdled him).
around halfway, miles had a showdown with an older lady who was running directly at him. i thought they were going to run into each other but miles jumped out of her way. when she started towards me, she yelled out :"i aint moving!" so i steered clear.
after that incident, i passed miles finished first in 17:48 and miles came in 18:19. jacob finished forth with 18:32. jessie brewer was overall female with 19:30.
the overall trophies were ceramic statues of Italian waiters bought from old tyme pottery for 14.99. the door prizes were golf balls and toy nascar race cars. awesome stuff.
