My chiropractor has been suggesting for months now that I try some orthodics. I had a pair back in 1988 or '89 and, while they seemed to help some, they didn't seem to make a huge difference. Soooo . . . I've been reluctant to cough up the $$'s for another pair. However, after weeks and weeks of leg, hip and back problems that just never go away, I decided to give them a try. WOW!! I can't hardly belive what a difference these modern technology custom orthodics make!! It's so dramatic that it feels like I'm in a different body. The company that makes these orthodics has a trained professional make molds of your feet. They send in the molds and the manufacturer does a digital scan of the mold and creates an orthodic to address the specifics of your foot. The difference is so dramatic that I suddenly had range of motion in my left hip that I don't normally have. I just thought I was stiff from scar tissue but it would seem that part of my range of motion problem was that my left ankle/ arch drops so much when I have weight on it that it rotates my hip into a plane it wasn't designed for; resulting in restricted motion. Long term results are still under evaluation but, so far, it's a whole new me!! ;D

Leif, glad to hear you found something that works. If PT doesn't correct this back problem of mine, I may be getting some contact info from you.

I too had some made for me in the early 90's and they were horrible. They were doing more harm than good. I learned nearly 10 years later that I could have had them adjusted but I could not for the life of me find them. I managed to find one of them. Kind of like the missing sock. So I had some made last year and what a huge difference. I am not sure you remember the big brace I had to wear for a while and knee injury that ruined me but it was due to my imbalanced hips. I have one leg that is longer than the other. (Ah hem...no jokes please) So I have not run without them since and I also wear them all of the time unless I have to wear heels. My body feels way better.

Orthotics refers to a device inserted into your shoe.....it takes the place of the "insole", or that removable liner inside the bottom portion of your shoe. They can be made of various materials....leather, plastic, platinum, etc.....
That's about all the info I can give on the subject since I never really went to a doctor and got an actual "scrip" for orthotics. It so happened a friend of mine had a pair that I was able to use......in fact I still have them and wear them during the day while at work.

leif or jon, i would like so more info, please. website...local company (if any)...price ranges....etc. You can call any rehab place and they can help you. I am not sure they do a fitting at the orthopedic office. Both times that I got mine it was from a rehabilitation center. The first one was the place on Upham Street. I forgot the name. The second place was at Azalea City Hand and Rehab. I am sure it depends on your insurance. I was very fortunate and only had to pay a copay for my visit during the mold and fitting.

I have one leg that is longer than the other . . . . Athena - it's EXTREEMLY rare for an individual to actually have one leg longer than the other. However, misalignments in the pelvis and hips frequently cause one leg to APPEAR to be longer than the other. Having this situation causes unnatural forces to be distributed through your body when you run and can caus a wide variety of injuries. I've struggled with the "one leg longer" problem for 25 years. However, depending on the misalignments in my low back and hips, sometimes one leg is longer, sometimes the other. Adjustments from the chiropractor will re-align everything and bring your legs back to being the same length. It WILL HELP. Either get yourself to the chiropractor or stop whining about being injured all the time. It will help you !! I know a good Christian chiropractor who can help you. E-MAIL ME !!

Athena - it's EXTREEMLY rare for an individual to actually have one leg longer than the other. The doctor told me the opposite, that it is very common. You are the first to tell me otherwise well, besides 3 doctors and 6 or 7 non Doctors. That is quite interesting. :(Hey now. I mention my injuries for advice and all have helped besides taking the advice to go to a Chiropractor. I am honestly scared of them. I have heard too many malpractices with them so I do not want to take any chances.

I mention my injuries for advice and all have helped besides taking the advice to go to a Chiropractor. I am honestly scared of them. I have heard too many malpractices with them so I do not want to take any chances. Like I said, it is VERY common for it to APPEAR that one leg is longer than the other. Also, like I said, a chiropractic adjustment can CORRECT the problem. I am trying to give you advice that I STRONGLY belive will help you. I have been in your shoes. Calf injuries, hip injuries, ITB problems, injuries that appear from nowhere for no apparent reason. Yes, I am still oft injured but, without chiropractic, I wouldn't be able to run at all. Yes, there are horror stories about chiropractors and malpractice. But there are just as many or even more horror stories about doctors and malpractice. That doesn't stop you from going to a medical doctor. A lot of great athletes (Lance Armstrong among them) rely on chiropractic to keep their bodies mechanically sound. It's a viable therapy and is no more dangerous than going to the doctor or dentist. All professions have their good and bad practicioners. I know a good one I can refer you to. I'm trying to convince you that it will help because I feel your pain. I've been through it myself. I'm going to be off-line for a few days. I can send you a referral when I get back.
